The town name was inspired by a Scottish railway worker. The many swamps and low-lying areas in the area reminded him of his home town of Mallaig, Scotland.
The Post office opened on October 15, 1928
The first Postmaster was Lectande Mageau.He held the position from 1928 to 1942.
