Euro-Canadian settlement in the area began picking up at the turn of the 20th century as pioneers moved into the fertile parkland regions of east-central Alberta.
A post office was officially opened in the area on April 1,1905 under the name "Blackfoot Hills," reflecting the local geography. In 1909, the name was shortened simply to Blackfoot.
As the agricultural community grew, local services followed. Telephone service was established in the hamlet in 1907, and it evolved into a small local service and farming hub.
