Chigwell’s origins date back to 1905, when a Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) station was established along the route. The arrival of the rails provided the necessary infrastructure for grain shipping and allowed agricultural settlers streaming into the region to transport their goods to larger markets.

The locality was named after Chigwell, a historic parish and suburb of London, England. This practice of naming Western Canadian railway sidings and post offices after English locales was common for railway officials and early administrators of the era.

Early settlers in the surrounding Chigwell district (such as homesteaders arriving in the late 1890s and early 1900s, like many in the broader Lacombe block) focused heavily on breaking the fertile parkland soil for grain farming and mixed agriculture.
