The community's history traces back to at least the late 19th century, with early European settlement in the region.
Archival records from the Provincial Archives of Alberta document Gurneyville's role in local parish activities, including bulletins and correspondence related to missionary efforts by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in the early 20th century.
Today, Gurneyville remains a small rural settlement focused on lakeside recreation and basic services, including the Gurneyville Store and access via Gurneyville Road, which the Municipal District maintains for residential and seasonal use.
