The town was originally named Barnett. It was renamed to Lacombe on December 1, 1891.
The town is named after Albert Lacombe, a French-Canadian Roman Catholic Oblate missionary who lived among and evangelized the Cree and Blackfoot First Nations of western Canada.
The Post Office opened on October 1, 1891.
